Ríe y Llora: A Celebration of Grief
This year marks the 7th anniversary of Hurricane Maria making landfall in Puerto Rico.
For many Puerto Ricans, resistance comes in the form of song, dance, and grieving can often function as a celebration. For many Puerto Ricans, Latinx folks, and folks in BIPOC communities, there is a strong overlap of celebration & grief throughout their lives, lineages, and histories.
Please join Step1 Theatre on Thursday, September 12th at 7pm, The Flea Theater in The Pete for a very special evening of music, dancing, performance art, and building a community altar dedicated to those we love and want to honor; this is an evening for holding space for both celebration and grief. All proceeds will go toward producing our staged reading of And the Trees Fall Down by Viviana Prado-Núñez at The Flea on Friday, September 20th.
We invite all attendees to help build a collective altar to honor the people, places, and things we love, celebrate, and mourn for. All are welcome to bring tokens that represents those you would like to honor: flags, photos, books, trinkets, etc.
If you are unable to attend our event but would like to donate, please do so via the Donate button below!
Thank you for your generosity!
Notes on safety and ensuring a positive experience:
We kindly request, for safety reasons, to avoid bringing real flowers or candles into the space, and that all guests take items back with them at the end of the night. There are no flames and no incense allowed in this venue.
We do not recommend bringing items that are valuable or irreplaceable. (For instance, if you want to bring a photo of a loved one, please bring a copy rather than an original.) The Step1 team and folks at The Flea are not responsible for lost items. By attending our celebration, guests accept responsibility for items brought into the space and taking them back home with you at the end of the evening. Thank you for your understanding.
Masks are encouraged, but not required.
